Fibretron thrives, with room to grow at Mystery Creek Events Centre

In July 2024, the colourful world of yarn and fibre took centre stage at Mystery Creek Events Centre with Fibretron, a festival of yarn.  This event having wrapped up its 6th year, the second time it has been held at MCEC, was designed to bring together independent yarn dyers, knitwear designers, raw material producers, and local yarn shops, creating a dynamic marketplace for creative enthusiasts. 

“We had a goal to provide a space where knitters, crocheters, spinners, and weavers could explore an extensive range of yarns, fibres, spinning wheels, and looms, and to connect this creative community,” said the organisers.

Fibretrons selection of Mystery Creek Events Centre was driven by several key factors. 

"The Bledisloe venue's capacity was well-suited to accommodate around 40-45 exhibitors, and there was ample space for attendee movement.” The free event was set to attract a sizable and diverse audience, ranging from young children to older adults, and it was important to the organisers that the venue could comfortably accommodate pushchairs and mobility scooters.

“The venue's location was also a significant advantage, being conveniently close to Hamilton Airport and the Waikato Expressway, to easily facilitate travel for attendees from across New Zealand. The ample free parking near the event building was a major convenience for all involved.”

Fibretron‘s organisers said that throughout their planning, there were no notable challenges with the Bledisloe venue, and during the event the space was efficiently used as intended and met all the requirements. The main venue space in the Bledisloe was designated to exhibitors and the general public, ensuring a seamless flow of attendees and transactions. Socialising areas were thoughtfully incorporated. The reception area became a lively space where attendees could relax and enjoy refreshments. There were also four food vendors stationed outside, and additional seating was provided for convenience, to enhance the atmosphere and bring the dining space together.

The event made use of several preferred suppliers provided by Mystery Creek Events Centre. Additional lighting was installed to enhance visibility, which proved invaluable during the festival. The AV equipment was used effectively for important announcements and to manage lost and found services. The infrastructure provided supported the festival’s catering needs, including accommodating food trucks on-site with ease.

Feedback from attendees was positive overall. Despite rain on the day of the festival, parking facilities were praised for being accessible and convenient.

Reflecting on the experience, Fibertron's organisers said the venue contributed significantly to the success of their event and allowed them to achieve what they set out to do. “The pre-planned layout with tables saved valuable setup time during pack-in, and facilitated smooth operations throughout the event. On-site support for minor issues and questions was especially appreciated, as was the effective management of parking needs. The clear signage at the venue was another detail that enhanced the overall experience.”

Based on this successful event, the organisers have expressed there is a strong intent to return to the venue next year. "Mystery Creek Events Centre proved an excellent choice for Fibretron for a second year. Its spacious and accessible layout, along with the supportive staff created an environment where both exhibitors and attendees could enjoy the day."
